Christopher Butler has been designing and making fine furniture for over

twenty years and is recognised as one of Scotland’s most accomplished

craftsmen.  From his workshop in the Scottish Borders he produces

furniture to commission for private and corporate clients, each piece

designed to suit an individual requirement.  The process of commissioning

is a very personal one and from initial discussions with the customer

and surveying the proposed site for the piece, through making, to final

delivery and installation - absolute care is taken to ensure furniture

of enduring quality and satisfaction.

Furniture is made predominantly in native hardwoods, such as

oak, cherry, chestnut, ash, often coupled with detailing in fruitwoods,

laburnum, bog oak, - and sometimes with the introduction of other

complementary materials, such as leather, slate and metals to enhance

the subtle detail of the design.  Designs are contemporary, often

understated, allowing the inherent quality of the timber to show

through.  This is achieved through experience, with the full knowledge

of how the material behaves and an understanding of the engineering

involved in constructing a piece of furniture that will give good

service and enduring pleasure over the years to come.

As well as commissioned items, the workshop occasionally

produces furniture in small batches and special pieces for exhibition.

The essence of Christopher Butler Furniture is:

  • quality of design and making
  • use of fine native timbers and associated materials
  • understanding of the craft of furniture-making gathered through experience
  • a first class and very personal level of customer service
  • recognition of both furniture and customers as individuals
